A group home (also called shared living accommodation or a small care home) is a residence where a small group of people can receive support in a warm, welcoming environment.

Soteria Independent Living provides quality group homes and Supported Independent Living arrangements (SIL) to people who require any level of support. We pride ourselves on catering to the individual needs of people with a range of disabilities, and crafting homes where people can enjoy a fulfilling life. We aim to make sure each of our residents feels included, safe and happy.

Soteria provides several options for accommodation:

  • living independently in your own home with specialist drop-in support
  • living with others in comfortable two to five bedroom residences such as units, townhouses and houses with fully maintained garden areas.

For more information on Soteria small care homes and how we help people living with disabilities, see below.

What is a group home?

A group home (also called a shared home or shared accommodation) allows people who require assistance – whether due to disability, a mental illness or a health condition – to live together in a supported environment.

Unlike an institutional approach to care, group homes are designed to provide a comfortable and social home environment to small groups of people (usually around two to five residents). Residents can receive the support they need while staying connected to the community and enjoying the benefits of shared living.

What is Supported Independent Living?

Under the NDIS, Supported Independent Living (SIL) is help with and/or supervision of daily tasks to develop the skills to live as independently as possible. These supports are provided to an NDIS participant in their home, regardless of property ownership, and can be in a shared or individual arrangement.

All residents in Soteria disability group homes can receive Supported Independent Living services as NDIS participants. For more information on how you can access SIL supports while living in our shared accommodation, please get in touch.

The benefits of Soteria disability group homes

The name Soteria is derived from Greek Mythology. Soteria is the goddess of safety and salvation, deliverance, and preservation from harm. These values have a strong alliance with our mission to put others first and help people lead happy, fulfilling lives.

Soteria Independent Living group homes can offer you:

Choice: we believe people should be able to choose where they live and who they live with. We strive to help the residents of our small care homes to be independent, so they can retain as much control of their daily lives as they want while being able to rely on assistance where they need it.

High quality care: with Soteria, you can gain access to top-of-the-range care from healthcare and disability support experts. Depending on your situation, this care vary from 24-hour care to drop in support. All of Soteria’s experts focus on what our residents can do, not what they can’t.

Autonomy: independence is an essential part of the Soteria way. If someone has ideas for their own care, we’ll take the time to listen. We also ensure that every resident has a say in the way their home is run, encouraging personal agency and autonomy.

Personalised care: Each of our small care homes is staffed by a team of dedicated professionals who get to know our residents and understand them as individuals. We offer person-centred support that is uniquely tailored to your individual needs and goals.

Social engagement: disability group homes offer an opportunity to make friends and be part of a welcoming community. Residents have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of fun activities and day programs, with as much support as they need.

Privacy: all our residents have their own private bedroom, whether they live in a single unit or a shared residence. This ensures you have privacy and your own personal space.

Visiting friends and family: our relaxed environment means that visiting times are not enforced. Family can visit when they want, making it feel more like a real home.

An opportunity to reach your goals: Soteria is dedicated to capacity building and helping you to reach your lifestyle goals. We will work with you on your independent living skills, and empower you to engage with your home environment and the community.

A group home is an innovative model of care that provides an alternative to traditional facilities, aged care homes and hospital settings. They are designed to cater for a small group of residents with support needs, while providing a comfortable environment that feels similar to your own home.

While staying in a group home, you can receive Supported Independent Living (SIL) supports as an NDIS participant. This can help you with everyday tasks and enable you to reach your individual goals.

There is a difference between a group home and Supported Independent Living. A group home is where a person lives, while Supported Independent Living (SIL) is assistance with daily tasks, with the aim of developing skills for independent living.

The NDIS provides funding for Supported Independent Living for eligible participants. It is typically provided for people who live in a group home and need a high level of regular support. This can help you enjoy fulfilling life while acquiring the skills you need to live as independently as possible.

Under the NDIS, Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is accommodation for people who require homes that cater for extreme functional impairment and high support needs. While SIL refers to the support your receive in the home, SDA refers to the house itself.

A group home can also be an SDA residence, provided it meets NDIS requirements. This means the home has special features to provide complex supports, while also maintaining a warm environment for a small group of people to live together.

Not every person living with a disability needs Specialist Disability Accommodation. The NDIS approves SDA funding for only a small proportion of participants with extreme functional impairment, or who have a very high need for constant and immediately available supports. In addition to considering a person’s goals and preferences, NDIS assessments may include activities of daily living, functional capacity assessments, and/or a behaviour assessment.

Group homes (sometimes called a care home) can offer many benefits to people living with disabilities, such as having professional support workers on hand to help with your needs being able to choose a home that suits your tastes social interaction with others living in your home and an opportunity to participate in day programs that meet your goals.

Most group homes are set up feel more like a home rather than a facility. Alongside receiving Supported Independent Living supports, this means you can also enjoy living in a place with comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces, having your loved ones visit and – depending on the location – living close to amenities such as shops and public transport.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) services in a care home includes things like:

  • Help with personal care tasks
  • Household chores
  • Capacity building training and support
  • Help with budgeting and money management
  • Cooking healthy meals and food preparation
  • Behaviour support
  • Help with catching public transport
  • Assistance with attending appointments
  • 药物管理
  • Social skills development
  • Support with supervision, safety and security

One of the key values of the NDIS and disability care in Australia is participant choice and control. People with disabilities can choose whether they want to live on their own or in a group home environment. They can also choose who they want to live with, and decide whether the person is a right match for them.

At HomeCaring, we take a collaborative approach to care that always puts you in the driver’s seat. We are happy to chat to you about your housing needs and whether a group home is a right fit for you.

When deciding which group home to live in, first check that the home is built to high quality standards so that you are safe and comfortable. Other features to look out for are:
