Respite Care

Respite Care

Caring for a loved one—whether they’re an older person or someone living with a disability—is one of the most valuable things you can do. It can also be a tiring, stressful and overwhelming task. Having regular breaks is important, so you can take care of yourself and recharge.

Respite is when someone else takes care of the person you support for a period time, so you can have some time out from your caring role. It can be for a couple of hours a week, overnight, or spending time away for a whole week. Respite is a great opportunity to rest or have time for other responsibilities, knowing the person you care for is in good hands. It also makes you a better carer, as you can look after your own needs before continuing to provide ongoing care.

What is respite care?

Respite care is when someone else takes care of the person you regularly take care of, giving you a chance to have a break. It gives you time to rest, pursue your interests, and do other activities that care for your mental health and wellbeing. It can also help you attend appointments and events, work, go on holidays, or look after other responsibilities.

You can access respite from family and friends, or from a professional service provider such as Home Caring. It can be for a short time, such as a few hours each week, or for a longer period, such as over a whole weekend. Types of respite care generally include:

  • Respite care at home – in home respite is when a carer comes to your loved one’s home and provides personal care and help with everyday activities (it can include overnight care)
  • Centre-based day respite – this takes place at a day centre and generally offers social activities, group sessions and fun programs for the person who is being supported
  • Community access respite – group or individual activities out in the community, creating a social experience that gets people out and about
  • Residential Respite Care – a temporary stay in short term accommodation or a residential care facility (please note that Home Caring does not offer respite care in an aged care home or residential facility)
  • Emergency Respite Care – care for when an emergency comes up in your family, such as needing to go to hospital or being unwell.

Is respite care funded by the government?

Depending on your situation, the person you care for may be eligible to receive government-funded respite services and short-term care from the Australian Government.

If the person is over 65 years old, they may be eligible to receive government-funded aged care respite services. Two ways you can access this is through a Home Care Package, or the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP). If they have a Home Care Package, respite care might be available if it is identified in the recipient’s care plan. To apply for a Home Care Package, you can ask for an assessment from an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessor on the My Aged Care website.

If the person is under 65 and living with a disability, they may be able to access respite support through their NDIS plan, under the Core supports category. This type of support gives NDIS participants access to Short Term Accommodation or Respite, which is funding for a short stay away from your usual home. Respite care is generally funded for up to 14 days at a time, at a total of 28 days in the year.

As a registered Home Care Package and NDIS provider, Home Caring provides a range of friendly respite care services for seniors and people living with disability. Our team of quality care professionals provide quality respite care that is beneficial for both recipients and their carers, so you have peace of mind knowing your loved one is in safe hands.
