We can all feel it… we are all getting a little fed up with dressing up in layers just to go out. Admittedly, this time of year has always been a weird time for me, I guess it’s just because I find myself becoming board with staying home in winter. So I’m going to offer some suggestions we can all do to help us through this ratty end of winter and help us prepare for an amazing Summer.

My first piece of advice is actually straight from my past obsession with winter and snow. This is the beautiful experience of snow skiing. What some of you probably wouldn’t have expected, skiing is actually a well known adaptive sport that has a beautiful community around it. I have been very lucky enough to grow up skiing since I was eight. Like most people in New South Wales who go skiing, I usually travel to beautiful Jindabyne, three hours past Canberra. Here, the amazing team at Disabled Wintersports Australia (DWA) can use their incredible equipment and fantastic a fully trained guides and volunteers to help you to meet your physical needs and develop your independence as much as possible. I still feel the benefits of it today, although I don’t go as often anymore.

For those people who don’t get onto the slopes this year for one reason or another, like me, you may feel that you are a bit over winter and staying indoors. Like many of you I can very honestly say that I have been feeling this way since mid July and I am just waiting for the first day of Spring. Although I feel this way I’m slowly coming to realise it would be worth a lot if I use this time to prepare myself and my body for a fun summer ahead. One method that I have tried to develop is to compete with one of my friends with doing the most amount of new experiences each week. I came up with this idea as I found that we were both in a rut waiting for summer to come.

This has sprung a new life in us both and I think will lead to an exciting start of Spring. So have a think about what you can do during this ratty end of winter, getting you excited about the new start to Summer 2024.
