24 Hour Care

24 Hour Care

24 hour home care

Deciding whether to place your loved one in an aged care home – or whether to move into one yourself, as you age – can be a difficult decision to make. While most people prefer to stay in their own home where everything is familiar, it can be difficult to manage if you have complex care needs that require constant attention.

This is where 24 hour home care can help. Twenty-four hour care is when you or your loved one experiences around the clock care for a 24 hour period while living at home, through a team of nurses and care workers.

This allows you to stay at home in a familiar place and remain close to your local community. It also removes the emotional strain of moving to an aged care home. Your family can have peace of mind knowing you are safe and well cared for, while you enjoy quality of life.

The benefits of 24 hour home care are:

  • having a personalised care plan that is tailored to your needs, interests and lifestyle;
  • not being placed in an aged care home prematurely;
  • carers can build relationships with families and support them with their caring responsibilities;
  • consistency in caregivers so you feel comfortable with the people supporting you;
  • a sense of calm and familiarity from staying at home – especially for those living with dementia;
  • ensuring your medical and personal needs are met at night by familiar care workers;
  • reducing the incidence of skin infections and urinary tract infections;
  • minimise risk of falls for those who need assistance with moving around the home (e.g. getting out of bed in the morning)

Frequently Asked Questions about 24 hour care

What is the difference between 24 hour aged care and lived in care?

24 hour aged care and lived in care are slightly different services. 24 hour aged care is usually provided by a team of care workers and nurses who share the workload. They provide care in shifts, so you can be supported by around the clock care.

Lived in care is when a care worker spends the night in your home. They will sleep overnight but be on hand to support you, if you need help. This service is more suitable for those who generally sleep through the night, and may need care at irregular times.

How much does 24 hour nursing care at home cost?

If you are eligible, 24 hour care can be funded through your Home Care Package. A Home Care Package is a government-funded program that allows older people to receive care services in their own home, so they can live independently for as long as possible. Once you have received a package, you are free to choose a care provider you like, and work with them to create a care plan that best meets your needs. The government then pays that provider a subsidy to deliver services in your home.

24 hour care is available through a Home Care Package, depending on what level of care you are eligible for. We provide care in a cost effective way without compromising on quality, so your funding can go further. For more information on how to apply for a Home Care Package, see here on our website.

Who is suited to 24 hour aged care?

24-hour care is suitable for someone who has round the clock care needs that are beyond what a family member is able to provide. Some reasons that you (or a loved one) might need 24 hour care are if you’ve recovering from extensive surgery such as an orthopaedic procedure; have physical limitations and struggle with day to day tasks; or have a chronic illness that requires constant supervision.

Helping your loved one make decisions about their care can be difficult, especially if they reach a point where they require 24 hour nursing care for elderly needs. Chat to them about their preferences. Would they like to stay at home or move into an aged care facility? What kind of support do they need to stay independent?

One option is 24 hour care at home through a home care provider. If they aren’t receiving government-funded aged care, you can start the process together. Once your loved one has applied (or you have done so on their behalf), your local ACAT assessor will be in touch to arrange a free face-to-face assessment at home. You can be with them for the entire process.
