The cost of Home Care Packages on the Gold Coast can vary, depending on the level of support and care you require. Packages are funded by the Australian Government, which makes it more affordable for seniors with different financial situations. If you are eligible for one, you are asked to contribute to the cost of your care through three different fees:

• A basic daily fee – this is set by the government at a percentage of the single basic age pension, and varies depending on your Home Care Package level. Not all Home Care Package providers ask you to pay a basic daily fee, so find out if a provider charges this fee when researching your options.
• An income tested care fee – this is an extra contribution that a care recipient might have to pay on top of your Home Care Package funding on the Gold Coast, depending on your financial circumstances. The process of applying for a Home Care Package begins with an ACAT assessment. ACAT stands for Aged Care Assessment Team. An ACAT assessment is an evaluation conducted by a team of health professionals to determine a person's eligibility for government-subsidised aged care services, including Home Care Packages.

To undergo an ACAT assessment of care needs, you must be 65 years or older (50 years or older for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people), and struggle to do everyday things. You can apply for an assessment on the My Aged Care website or by calling 1800 200 422. You can also get someone to apply on your behalf, if you prefer.

During the assessment, the ACAT team will meet you face-to-face in your home, and chat to you about your health, what support you’re currently receiving, your ability to manage daily living tasks, and your overall support needs. The team may include nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals, who will work together to assess the individual's physical, psychological, and social needs.

Based on the assessment, the ACAT team will recommend appropriate aged care services that best meet your needs. These services may include residential aged care, a Home Care Package, or other community-based support services. If you are eligible for a Home Care Package, you will be notified by mail, and placed in a national queue until a package becomes available to you. As you wait, you can look for different Home Care Package providers in your area, and choose one that best meets your needs.

If you are not eligible, you may still be able to receive a lower level of support through the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP).

5. What is the process for developing a care plan for clients? Ideally, you want a Home Care Package that works collaboratively with you to develop you care plan, so you can have real choice over your services.

6. How does the provider communicate with clients and their families? When you meet a provider, get a feel for how they communicate with you or your family. Do you feel safe and included? Do they make an effort to understand your needs? Do they listen to your point of view?

7. How does the provider ensure the safety of clients in their homes? Check they have the proper accreditations and are registered to deliver government-funded Home Care Packages, so you can ensure quality of care.

8. What is the provider's approach to handling complaints or issues that may arise? Ask the provider if they have a channel for feedback, and how they implement or address the feedback they receive. Also find out their process for managing conflict or disagreements.

9. What is the cost structure for the provider's home care services? Find out about any fees the provider might charge, so you get an accurate picture of how much their services will cost.

10. Does the provider offer flexible services? The Home Care Package program takes a person-centred approach to care, which means you can receive services at a time that suits you. Check that your provider is able to provide flexible care services that suits your lifestyle.
