What is a Home Care Package?

The Home Care Packages program is a government-funded initiative designed to assist elderly Australians in maintaining their independence within the comfort of their own homes. This program offers a range of services tailored to address individual needs, including assistance with bathing, transportation to appointments, laundry and cleaning support, participation in exercise classes, home modifications, and physiotherapy sessions. These services are delivered by skilled aged care workers and healthcare professionals as part of a personalised care plan.

The main goal of a Home Care Package is to empower older people to make decisions regarding their care. Recipients have the flexibility to customise their packages, allowing them to create a personalised care plan that truly meets their needs. Packages can also be adjusted to accommodate changing needs over time, ensuring long-term support to help people live at home for as long as possible.

Getting home care is an effective way to avoid moving into an aged care home before you’re ready, so you can keep living in your local community while being supported. It also helps you stay close to your loved ones and support network, which can enhance your quality of life.Top of FormBottom of Form

What levels of Home Care Packages are available?

There are four Home Care Package levels in Townsville and the rest of Australia, each designed to cater to varying degrees of care needs.

  • Level 1: this Home Care Package level is suitable for people with basic care needs. It includes a small amount of assistance with tasks like house cleaning, meal preparation, and personal care.
  • Level 2: geared towards those with low-level care needs, this package provides a bit more support than a Level 1 Home Care Package. It may cover services such as help with bathing, grooming, and basic home maintenance.
  • Level 3: intended for people with intermediate care needs, Level 3 offers a higher level of assistance for seniors. Services may include more substantial support with everyday tasks, as well as specialist care such as physiotherapy sessions and mobility assistance.
  • Level 4: this is the highest level of Home Care Package, tailored for participants with high care needs. Level 4 provides comprehensive support, encompassing a broad range of services such as complex nursing care, 24/7 support, dementia support, health monitoring, and significant help with daily activities.

Income-tested Fee: some people may be required to pay an additional income-tested fee towards their support services, which is worked out according to an assessment of your income and financial situation.

To be approved for a Home Care Package, you first need to complete an ACAT assessment, to determine whether it’s the best solution for your care needs. Applying for an assessment is relatively simple – go to the My Aged Care website and fill out the online form, or call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. You’ll need your Medicare card handy and a form of ID, and you’ll also be asked questions about your living situation and care needs. You can also ask a friend or family member to apply on your behalf.

If you might be eligible for a Home Care Package, an ACAT member will give you call and arrange for a time to visit you for a face-to-face assessment. When they visit, the team member will chat to you about how you’re coping at home, any health issues you have, and what type of care might best suit your needs. You can also ask any questions that you may have, and learn about care services in your area. You don’t have to be assessed alone – you can have someone with you for support the whole time.

After your ACAT assessment, the team will decide whether you are eligible for a Home Care Package. If you have approved for one, you’ll receive a letter from My Aged Care that states what level you are approved for. You’ll then be placed in a national queue until your Home Care Package is available to you.
