What is the NDIS?

The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is a government-funded program that supports Australians with a significant and permanent disability. If you are deemed eligible as a NDIS participant, you are provided with funding to access a range of support services that can help you live a more independent life – for example, personal care, allied health therapy, domestic assistance, transport, home modifications, behaviour management support, or help with accessing community activities in your area.

The NDIS is built around choice and control, which means you get to choose the types of support services that you need, and who provides them. This allows you to tailor your support to your individual needs, preferences and circumstances. You then work with your NDIS provider to develop a personalised plan that takes into account your specific needs and goals, so that you can access the right support services to help you achieve them.

Looking for high quality NDIS service providers? Home Caring is here to assist. Our locally based teams of support workers and nurses provide high quality care in Bendigo’s suburbs, so NDIS participants can reach their goals. To learn more about our disability service delivery expectations, please get in touch with our friendly team for a chat.

Who is eligible for NDIS funding?

To get NDIS support, you need to:

  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a Protected Special Category Visa
  • Be under 65 years old when you apply
  • Have a permanent and significant disability that impacts your daily activities

If you are older than 65 and need support for daily activities due to frailty or age-related conditions, you might be better suited for the government’s Home Care Package program, which helps seniors access home care services to help them live independently in the community. You can apply for a Home Care Package on the My Aged Care website.

How do I apply for NDIS funding?

To start the NDIS funding application process, you'll need to provide details about your disability, your current support requirements, and your future goals. This may involve submitting relevant documents such as medical reports and assessments conducted by your healthcare professionals. You can submit your application to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) on the website or over the phone. A loved one can also make an application on your behalf.

Once your application is assessed and your eligibility is confirmed, you'll collaborate with a NDIS planner to create a support plan that is personalised to your needs. This plan serves as a roadmap, detailing the kinds of support and services you need to help you achieve your goals, and lead a more independent life. The NDIS is a flexible program, which means that the funding categories are flexible and can be customised to your needs. This gives you control over how you are supported, the aids you can access, and what your support plan will look like.

The NDIS is committed to ongoing support and reviews, for quality care. When you access support, you’ll take part in regular check-ins and reassessments, to ensure that your plan is the best fit for your changing circumstances and needs.

How do I find a NDIS approved provider in Bendigo?

Finding NDIS support services in Bendigo can seem difficult at first, as it’s hard to know where to start – especially with so many different providers offering various types of services. To help you get started, here are some tips.

  • Do a NDIS online search – On the NDIS website, there is a search function that allows you to type in your postcode and look for disability care providers in your local region. You can also filter your search results based on different criteria, so you can narrow your search for NDIS approved providers in Bendigo you’re looking for.
  • Speak to your contacts – ask around your own social networks about who they would recommend, especially those who have had personal experience accessing disability support. Friends, family members or support groups can be a valuable source of information regarding NDIS providers in your area. They can also steer you towards providers who provide great customer service.
  • Talk to your Local Area Coordinator – In most cases, your NDIS Local Area Provider will be your first contact as a participant, and they will help you access information and provide guidance. They can help you get started looking for NDIS providers that might be a good fit for you.
  • Hire your own support worker online – if you are looking for a support worker and want to be in control of your plan, you can search for your own support worker and hire them yourself using an online platform. These services allow you to search for support workers in your area from a curated data base. Just be sure to do your research and make sure that whoever you hire is a registered NDIS provider with the right experience and qualifications for your needs.

Can I change providers to Home Caring?

Yes, if you need a different provider or have moved location, you can make a change, and ask for someone different to provide you with your NDIS services. To change to Home Caring, you’ll need to let your current provider know that you intend to change, and follow the process they set out for you. You may have to wait for a notice period to end, depending on what is stated in your service agreement.

If you need any support throughout this process, or want to learn about our service delivery model at Home Caring, please get in touch. Our customer team is here to help you with anything you need.

What are the different ways I can manage my NDIS plan?

The NDIs is all about having control and choice over the way you are supported, and how your funding is used to access different disability services. Here are the different ways you can manage your NDIS plan:

Agency-managed – if you choose to have an agency-managed plan, the NDIA can manage your NDIS funds on your behalf. You choose from a range of registered NDIS providers, and the agency directly pays your support providers for you. You are able to keep track of what claims your providers are making against your NDIS funding, and stay on top of your budget.

Self-managed – you can manage your NDIS funds yourself, if you prefer. This can give you flexibility over which providers you choose, and the kinds of supports you access to help you pursue your goals. If you would like to self-manage your NDIS plan, chat to your Local Area Coordinator or NDIS planner, so they can guide you through the process and make sure you have all the information you need.

Plan managed – you can ask for a registered NDIS plan management provider to help you manage your support plan. This means the planner will receive your NDIS funds, and distribute them to your chosen providers, on your behalf. A planner can also buy supports for you, under your NDIS plan. Plan management providers are required to be registered with the NDIS Commission (except in Western Australia).
