What is a SIL package?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a NDIS support that helps people with disability live independently in their own homes. While many people access SIL while living in shared accommodation, you can also receive SIL if you’re living on your own, or with your family. This could include help with getting ready in the morning, learning how to cook meals, learning to catch public transport in your area, or going on social outings with your friends. The aim is to provide a safe environment where you have all the supports you need, so you can build your independence and actively engage with your local community.

Supported Independent Living is designed for people who have high support needs because of their disability, and who need a significant amount of support during the week. If you are eligible, you can access Supported Independent Living in Caboolture under the Core Supports category of your NDIS plan.

What is the difference between Supported Independent Living and Specialist Disability Accommodation?

If this is your first time exploring NDIS services, you may have heard words like Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) and be unsure what they refer to. Both SDA and SIL are different types of services to support people with disability, but they do this in different ways.

Specialist Disability Accommodation is specialist housing for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. This could be shared supported accommodation, community residential units, or self-contained homes that are fitted with specialist housing solutions (e.g. ramps, a ceiling hoist, special lighting) to help you live independently.

Supported Independent Living refers to the support services you receive to help you live independently, such as personal care or learning life skills. It is intended for NDIS participants who have higher support needs due to their disability, and require a significant amount of help throughout the week.

If you require both SDA and SIL because of your disability and are deemed eligible, you can receive them both as separate supports in your NDIS plan. This gives you more choice and control, as you can choose to live in an SDA home from one provider that you like, and access SIL from a different provider that best suits your needs. You can also access SDA and SIL from the same provider, if that is your preference.

Home Caring has a wide range of Specialist Disability Accommodation and Supported Independent Living options NDIS in Caboolture. To talk to someone about your situation, please get in touch with our disability experts. We’re happy to help.

Is SIL the same as living in a group home?

Many people access Supported Independent Living while living in a group home or shared household with residents who are also NDIS participants. There are lots of benefits to living with others, such as being independent, not having to live with your family, having opportunities to socialise in communal living, learning daily living skills, doing group activities, and learning how to take responsibility in a household. It can also be a great opportunity to make friends for life.

SIL is also available to people who live on their own, but require regular support. This could mean having a support worker visit you to provide day-to-day assistance, help you learn basic life skills, or provide services that ensure you are able to live as safely and independently as possible. To be eligible for Supported Independent Living, you must be able to prove that you have significant housing needs, and that because of your disability, SIL is a ‘reasonable and necessary’ support in order for you to live an independent life in the community.

Along with quality group homes in Caboolture, Home Caring also provides group homes in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Canberra and South Australia. All of our properties are in thriving suburbs, close to all amenities for your convenience and enjoyment. To talk to someone about your specific circumstances, please get in touch with our disability care experts for a free consultation.

What does Supported Independent Living funding cover?

Supported Independent Living is provided by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for eligible participants. The amount of funding you get in your plan depends on how much support you need to live independently, and ranges from lower needs (regular supervision), standard needs (more active 24/7 assistance) and high needs (continual and active assistance for complex needs).

SIL covers things like:

  • Personal care such as help showering or getting dressed
  • Meal preparation
  • Household chores support
  • Social activities in groups
  • Help with grocery shopping
  • Transport to appointments and activities
  • Help with budgeting and running a household
  • Medication management
  • Help catching public transport
  • Learning skills that build your independence
  • Support for behaviour management
  • 24/7 care

SIL does not cover costs such as the rent or mortgage repayments of your home, utility bills (e.g. electricity, internet, water), mobile phone plans, home repairs, day-to-day living expenses such as food or recreation activities, vehicle costs, holidays, discretionary spend, or items that are already covered by other NDIS supports, such as mobility equipment and independent living aids.

How do I apply for SIL funding?

Supported Independent Living is funded as Assistance with Daily Living, under the Core Supports category of your NDIS plan. You must apply for this type of support to show that SIL is ‘reasonable and necessary’ for you to live independently. The NDIA will determine if you are eligible based on your needs, individual NDIS goals, the type of home you want to live in, and if you need significant supports to be independent. This will involve getting a functional assessment report from an occupational therapist, which shows how SIL is required to help you achieve your housing goals.

Applying to have SIL included in your NDIS plan can be a complex and time-consuming process, so it’s best to ask your support coordinator to help you. They can help you get your reports ready, and ensure you give appropriate evidence to apply for SIL funding. If you don’t have one, talk to your Local Area Coordinator during your NDIS Plan meeting and ask if you can get one included in your NDIS plan, or tell them that you’d like to explore having SIL included in your plan.

How do I find SIL providers in Caboolture?

Looking for Supported Independent Living providers in Caboolture can be a challenging process, is you need to make sure that you find the home that is right for your needs. There is plenty of choice out there, and some may have a waiting list due to lack of availability.

A good place to start looking is logging on to your NDIS portal and using the ‘Provider Finder’ tool. This online tool helps you find information about NDIS registered providers in your area by performing a search based on your suburb and postcode. Some other ways to find quality SIL providers near you is to ask other NDIS participants for recommendations, do research online (be sure that any provider you consider is registered to provide their services with the NDIS), or you could ask your support coordinator about SIL providers in your area.

Finding the right SIL home can take time. Some things you will need to consider are:

  • Whether the support to housemate ratio matches the level of support stated in your assessment
  • Whether the household meets the requirements in your assessment
  • The mix of housemates and whether you can get along with the people you’ll be living with
  • The location of the home, and how close it is to your support network
  • Whether you like the house you’ll be living in, and feel comfortable there
  • If you can access all the supports you need from the provider

To chat to someone about your SIL needs or other disability support services, please get in touch for a chat with our friendly team.

What is a Roster of Care?

To work out how much SIL funding you need, a SIL provider works with you to create a Roster of Care. This is a weekly timetable that shows how SIL supports will be distributed and shared across each member of a household in a typical week. It includes how many hours and support workers each participant in the household will have in a day, in 30-minute blocks.

A Roster of Care (or RoC) is usually created by your SIL provider, and they will consult with you to ensure that you are happy with it. The roster shows what a typical week looks like, and is used to assess how much SIL funding is ‘necessary and reasonable’ for you. Once your Roster of Care and NDIS Plan is submitted to the NDIA and approved, you will receive SIL funding that is used to pay for supports from your SIL provider.
