Frequently Asked Questions

How do I qualify for Supported Independent Living?

To qualify for SIL, you must be a NDIS participant over 18 years old. During your NDIS planning meeting, your planner will assess if SIL is a reasonable and necessary support based on your individual goals, independent living skills, and professional assessments. If approved, your plan will include funding for SIL services to help you achieve greater independence.

SIL is provided by registered NDIS service providers who offer professional support workers to assist with daily tasks. Choosing the right provider is crucial—consider their experience, approach to independence, respect for personal goals, and ability to connect you with your community.

A Roster of Care outlines the support each resident receives throughout the week. It details how support workers allocate their time among housemates in shared living arrangements. Your SIL provider will develop this roster with you and submit it to the NDIS for funding approval.

A Support Coordinator helps you navigate the NDIS and implement your SIL plan effectively. They assist with service coordination, budget management, provider selection, and ensuring you receive the right support to meet your goals.

A Service Agreement is a contract between you and your SIL provider that outlines the services provided, costs, rights, and responsibilities. While not mandatory, having one ensures transparency and clarity in your support arrangements.

If you experience issues with your SIL provider, open communication is key. Address concerns directly with your provider, or if needed, report any issues to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission at 1800 035 544.

If you’re not eligible for SIL, alternative NDIS supports may be available, such as home modifications, assistive technology, personal care assistance, and help with household tasks.

SIL provides daily living support services, while SDA refers to specialized housing designed for individuals with extreme functional impairments. If eligible, you can receive both, allowing you to choose your preferred home and support provider separately.
