What is the NDIS?

Unsure what the NDIS refers to? The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government-funded program that provides support to Australians who are living with a permanent and significant disability.

As a NDIS participant, you receive funding to access a variety of support services that can assist you in living a more independent life. These services could include help with getting dressed in the morning, learning how to stay on top of your budget, doing the laundry with support, transport to your appointments, modifications to your home, mobility equipment, life skills training, or clinical care for medical needs.

The NDIS operates on a basis of choice and control, allowing you to decide which support services you require and from whom. This enables you to personalise your support according to your needs, preferences, and circumstances. You will collaborate with your NDIS provider to develop a customised plan based on those needs, so you can receive support that best enables you to meet your goals.

Who is eligible for NDIS funding?

To be eligible for NDIS funding, you must:

  • be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa
  • be aged under 65 years old at the time of your application
  • have a permanent and significant medical condition or impairment (physical, intellectual, cognitive, neurological, visual, hearing or psychosocial) that substantially affects your ability to undertake everyday activities. Please note that the NDIS does not provide funding or supports for time-limited (non-ongoing) conditions.

How do I apply for NDIS funding?

Need some guidance on how to apply for NDIS funding? Here are the steps to take.

  • Before you start your application, visit the NDIS website to complete a checklist and see if you might be eligible for funding. The quick survey will take you through a series of questions to give you an idea of whether you might be eligible for NDIS funding.
  • If you think you are eligible and would like to apply, you can either make a verbal application by calling 1800 800 110, or complete an online Access Request form. The form will ask you to confirm your identity, give consent for the NDIS to collect your information, and provide your contact details (you can also have someone else sign the form on your behalf
  • When applying, you’ll also need to provide evidence for your age, Australian citizenship or permanent residency, and your disability. Good evidence for your disability comes from your treating health professional (e.g. a GP, paediatrician, occupational therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist, speech pathologist or neurologist). It confirms your disability, it’s impact on different areas of your life, describes previous treatments and outcomes, and future treatment options, along with their expected outcomes.
  • The NDIA then reviews your application and makes a decision about whether you are eligible for NDIS supports. If you are not eligible, you can apply again in three months, as a degenerative disability (e.g. Multiple Sclerosis) or a recently acquired traumatic injury can change your day-to-day function over time.

How do I find a NDIS approved provider on the Gold Coast?

Finding NDIS support services on the Gold Coast can be a challenging task, with so many different providers offering a wide range of services. Doing your research, though, is important, so you can make the best decision for your needs. Here are some steps that may help.

  • Use the NDIS provider tool. The NDIS website has an online tool that helps you to find registered providers in your area. Just enter your postcode, select the types of NDIS approved providers on the Gold Coast you’re looking for, and the search will generate a list of providers according to your criteria. You can then contact these providers directly to find out more about their services and fees.
  • Chat to your friends and family members. If you know people who are NDIS participants, ask who they would recommend in your area. This might include friends, family members, health professionals, or support groups. Disability advocacy organisations or local community groups can also put you in the right direction.
  • Speak to your Local Area Coordinator – your LAC is usually your first point of contact when you become a NDIS participant, and are seeking information and guidance on how to access support. They can help you find providers that meet your needs, in your local area.

Can I change NDIS providers to Home Caring?

It is possible to switch your NDIS provider to Home Caring from your current provider. To make this change, you will need to follow the procedure specified in your service agreement and inform your provider accordingly, which may involve adhering to a notice period before switching. Our team is available to assist you throughout the process and answer any questions you may have. Please don't hesitate to contact us for further guidance.

What are the different ways I can manage my NDIS plan?

Managing your NDIS supports isn’t always easy, as you may be receiving multiple services for different needs. Plan management is all about regularly reviewing your plan, keeping track of your budget, ensuring your providers are being paid, and purchasing the right supports for your needs. Under the NDIS, there are a few different ways you can manage your NDIS plan.

Through the NDIA – the NDIA can manage your NDIS funds for you, and directly pay registered support providers on your behalf.

Managing your own plan – you can manage your own NDIS funds and pay your providers yourself. In this instance, the NDIS will reimburse you for the NDIS supports received.

Through a NDIS Plan Manager – this is a NDIS service provider who helps participants manage their funding. They look after the financial aspects of the participant’s plans, pay service providers, and manage invoices. Plan management providers are required to be registered with the NDIS Commission (except for those in Western Australia).

Are you accessing NDIS in home support on the Gold Coast? Home Caring’s NDIS plan management services will help you stay on top of your NDIS plan and pay your providers on time, taking the stress out of being a participant. With years of NDIS experience behind us, our team of experts help you with tasks like managing your budget, paying service providers and keeping track of your spending.

What is a NDIS support coordinator?

A NDIS Support Coordinator is a provider who helps you understand, coordinate and implement the supports in your plan. They help you have genuine choice and control over your supports, and build your capacity for independence. Some of the tasks a support coordinator might help you with are:

  • Understanding what funded supports your plan includes
  • Choosing NDIS care providers on the Gold Coast that suit your needs
  • Negotiating with providers about the supports they will provide you with, and the cost
  • Ensuring service agreements and bookings are completed on time
  • Preparing for your NDIS plan review
  • Making sure you get the most value out of your funding
  • Helping you use the NDIS myplace portal
  • Working with you to develop your goals and the steps you can take to achieve them
  • Organising assessments that are needed to determine the type of funding you need
  • Putting you in touch with places where you can engage with your community
  • Increasing your capacity to direct and manage your own support

A support coordinator is different from a NDIS plan manager, who assists you with the financial side of your plan such as paying bills and budgets.
